Born into slavery, Steward escaped to freedom and became one of Rochester’s first and most prominent Black entrepreneurs and abolitionists. In 1857, he published his autobiography “Twenty-Two Years a Slave, and Forty Years a Freeman“. A successful businessman, author, and advocate for social justice, Steward’s legacy is now rightfully celebrated in the heart of the city he helped build. This renaming transforms a visit to the plaza into a meaningful encounter with the powerful story of a Rochester trailblazer.
