Portrait of Austin Steward from Twenty-two years a slave, and forty years a freeman

The plaza’s rededication in 2024 marks a significant moment for Rochester, as it now honors Austin Steward, a pivotal figure in the city’s early history. Born into slavery, Steward escaped to freedom and became one of Rochester’s first and most prominent Black entrepreneurs and abolitionists. In 1857, he published his autobiography “Twenty-Two Years a Slave, and Forty Years a Freeman“. A successful businessman, author, and advocate for social justice, Steward’s legacy is now rightfully celebrated in the heart of the city he helped build. This renaming transforms a visit to the plaza into a meaningful encounter with the powerful story of a Rochester trailblazer.

Nestled along the scenic Genesee River, Austin Steward Plaza has undergone a breathtaking transformation. The new “river flow” design concept creates a dynamic and inviting atmosphere, with gracefully winding pathways that mirror the gentle currents of the water below. As you meander through the plaza, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the Genesee, offering a picturesque backdrop for a leisurely stroll.

More than just a pretty space, Austin Steward Plaza is designed to bring people together. With ample seating, open green spaces, and designated areas for public art, the plaza is a versatile venue for community gatherings and events. Throughout the warmer months, the space comes alive with activities like “Yoga on the Riverway,” where you can find your zen against the urban landscape, and “Sunset Sips,” a perfect way to unwind with friends and enjoy the evening ambiance.

Part of the ROC the Riverway initiative, the revitalized plaza is a hub of connectivity, seamlessly linking pedestrians and cyclists to the Genesee Riverway Trail. This makes it the perfect starting point or scenic stop on your downtown adventure. Whether you’re on a bike ride, a morning jog, or a simple stroll, the plaza provides a safe and beautiful route to experience the riverfront. Let its history inspire you, its scenery captivate you, and its community spirit welcome you.
